Why I Relay by:Michelle Sims

That C word is one of my least favorites in the English Language.  Unfortunately Cancer has touched every one of us in one way or another.  Some have fought or are fighting for their own lives, others have watched as their loves ones have fought and either lost the battle or come out victorious.

When my grandmother was diagnosed with brain cancer, it came as a huge shock. She was such a healthy person and was very health concious. She had surgery to remove her tumor, but unfortunatly she didn't last very long afterwards.  She lost her battle with that dreaded C word and we lost her in our lives, at least temporarily.

Many years later, that C word once again hit me like a ton of bricks when my mom was dignosed with Multiple Myeloma.  She was also in complete kidney failure which was caused by the cancer.  She lived for 3 years on kidney dialysis, she had chemotherapy, lost her hair, and lived life the best she could knowing her time was limited.

It has now been five years since my mother passed from this life.  There isn't a day that goes by that I don't miss her.  I have been involved with relay now for 4 years and it is my way of fighting back.  It helps me to feel as if I am doing something in my mother's name.

So it is for them that I relay.

I relay for my grandmother.

I relay for my mom.

I relay for my good friend Eliza (our team captain)
who has had her own fight with cancer.

I relay for me and the hope that I never hear that dreaded word regarding my own health or in regards to my husband and children.

I relay for my children and the hope that one day we can wipe that C word right our of our dictionary because it is no longer a threat.

I relay in hopes that one day there will be a cure for Cancer!!!

Relay for Life Blog Kick Off 2011

It's that time of year again!  Time to start our Relay For Life Team fund raising efforts.  This year we decided to do a team blog to let all those supporting us why we each participate in Relay.  A few years ago I created this video with pictures of my experiences through my cancer treatment and reasons why I participate in American Cancer Society's Relay For Life event.  I thought I would share it on our team's blog to start off our posts.  The words to my poem are also listed in the text below.  Enjoy!

I relay for life. For my life, for your life and every life touched by cancer.

I relay for those first diagnosed,
Who know not what’s ahead, but are ready to fight.

I relay for the survivor learning of recurrence,
Who already knows what awaits, but is still ready to fight.

I relay for the parents watching their child suffer through chemo
And the child enduring the suffering.

I relay for the husband afraid to lose his wife
And the wife afraid of being taken from her family.

I relay to fight the cancer that tried, but failed, to take my life,
And to bring hope to those who are fighting.

I relay to celebrate being a survivor
And to honor those who have not survived.

I relay for those who have the determination and the will to fight,
But surrender because they could not succeed.

I relay because I do not know why I won my battle and others lost,
But I believe that what I am doing will help more people win.

I relay for the friends I met through treatment,
To honor fights won and fights lost.

I relay to help calm my fears,
Because at times I am still afraid.

I relay for life. For my life, for your life and every life touched by cancer.

New Blog

Hello all, we are starting this new blog to document and market the efforts of our team as we attempt to raise money for The American Cancer Society's Relay For Life.  We have several projects already under way.  You can view them by clicking the links above.  The links are for our Crop Out Cancer Scrapbooking day, our Adopt an Owl Program, other items for sale that will donate proceeds to our team, and our Team Events.  Each page will contain details about each project we are working on and how you can help.

This year we have chosen a theme for our team and relay camp.  You may have noticed owls everywhere on this blog, that is because we have chosen owls as our theme this year.  We plan to do all we can with owls.  We will have owl cookies at our booth, owl chocolates, owl t-shirts, and of course our adoptable owls.  If you have any other OWL ideas for us, please feel free to leave a comment below and we will see if we can incorporate them somehow.

We will be using this blog to share our own personal stories of loss and survival where cancer is concerned and share why we relay.  Our team is made up of several people who have been touched very closely by cancer in one way or another.  Over the next few weeks we will be sharing our stories with you.  Please follow us to stay up to date on all that we are doing and how you can help us raise money to aid in the fight against cancer.

Also you can click the LIKE button on the right to follow us on Facebook.
